Your pool pump runs for hours every day, all season, which makes it the single biggest electricity user in most pool setups. The good news: the cost is easy to calculate, and easy to cut once you know the numbers.
This guide shows you the simple formula, walks through a real example, and explains why a variable-speed pump is the biggest money-saver in pool equipment.
The Formula
Running cost comes down to three things: how much power your pump draws (watts), how long you run it (hours), and what your utility charges (dollars per kilowatt-hour).
- Convert watts to kilowatts: divide the pump's wattage by 1,000.
- Daily energy (kWh) = kilowatts × hours run per day.
- Daily cost = daily kWh × your electricity rate ($/kWh).
- Multiply out for monthly (× 30) and seasonal (× months) totals.
Don't know your pump's wattage? It's on the motor label, or estimate it as horsepower × ~750 (so a 2 HP pump is roughly 1,500 watts). The US average electricity rate is about $0.17 per kWh, but check your bill for your real rate.
A Real Example
Take a common single-speed pump: 1,500 watts (about 2 HP), run 8 hours a day, at $0.17/kWh. That's 1.5 kW × 8 hours = 12 kWh per day, or about $2.04 a day. Over a 5-month season that's roughly $306 — and run year-round it's about $745. For many homes, the pool pump alone is a noticeable chunk of the summer power bill.
How to Cut the Cost
- Run fewer hours: most pools only need 8–12 hours of turnover a day, and often less. Don't run 24/7 out of habit.
- Run during off-peak hours if your utility has time-of-use rates.
- Keep the filter and baskets clean: a clogged system makes the pump work harder and longer.
- Upgrade to a variable-speed pump: this is the big one. Running at a lower speed for longer moves the same water using a fraction of the energy, because power draw drops sharply as speed decreases.
Variable-speed pumps cost more upfront than single-speed models, but they typically pay for themselves in energy savings, often within a season or two, and many utilities offer rebates for them.
